An essential principle of self government is the establishment of a personal Code of Conduct. Here is a Code of Conduct that you may accept “as is” or use as inspiration to create your own.
Self-Ownership: I claim ownership of my life and I accept responsibility for it.
Happiness and Authority: My happiness is my ultimate objective of which I am the final judge and authority. Only I can decide what makes me happy. I must use my mind in its maximum reasoning capacity to create, organize, and produce that which will maximize and sustain my quality of life.
Actions have Consequences: In seeking my happiness I recognize the fact that, in accordance with the laws of nature, all actions have consequences. To ignore this fact invites harm. Reality consists of reliable and predictable physical laws. When I ignore or misinterpret these physical laws I will “stub my toe” on reality or worse. I must “do good” if I seek to “receive good”.
Rational Self-Interest: Rational Self-Interest, to me, consists of the use of reason (the means) to achieve the maximum happiness (the end) in my life. This is consistent with the fact in nature that actions have consequences. It asks the question, “Is this act likely to produce both the short-term and long-term results that I desire?”.
Silver Rule: With the foregoing in mind I strive to be the kind of person that I wish to associate with. That kind of person is one who respects mankind and his property. My desire is to help create the kind of world that I want to live in. I recognize that direct personal action is always more effective than indirect collective action.
